The concept of automation is a dynamic development process. In the past, people's understanding of automation or functional goal of automation is to replace human operation with mechanical action to automatically complete specific tasks. This is essentially the view that automation replaces human manual labor.

Process automation: chemical treatment automation of fluid or powder in petroleum refining and chemical industry. Generally, the process control system consisting of detection instruments, regulators and computers is used for optimal control of heating furnace, distillation tower and other equipment or the whole plant. The main control methods adopted include feedback control, feedforward control and optimal control.
Mechanical manufacturing automation: This is the result of the combination of mechanization, electrification and automatic control. The object of processing is discrete workpiece. The early mechanical manufacturing automation is the use of single machine automation of mechanical or electrical components or simple automatic production lines. Since the 1960s, due to the application of electronic computers, there have been CNC machine tools, machining centers, robots, computer-aided design, computer-aided manufacturing, automated warehouses, etc. A flexible manufacturing system (FMS) suitable for multi-variety and small-batch production has been developed. The automatic workshop based on flexible manufacturing system, together with information management and production management automation, has emerged the factory automation using computer integrated manufacturing system (CIMS).
Management automation: The automation of human, financial, material, production, office and other business management in a factory or public institution is a comprehensive technology with information processing as the core, involving electronic computers, communication systems, control and other disciplines. Generally, a local network consisting of multiple computers and various terminals capable of processing a large amount of information at high speed is adopted. Hyundai has developed a decision support system (DSS) based on the management information system to provide alternative solutions for senior managers to make decisions.
